This quantitative ability question was sent to me by Mr. Satish Kumar by mail. I generally answer the questions I get on email by directly replying to them. However, I thought this question is worth to be discussed with all QM readers. So here it goes -

Question

I have a total of rs 1000. Item A costs rs 110,item B costs rs 90, item C costs rs 70 ,item D costs rs 40 and item E costs rs 45. For every item D that i purchase, I must also buy only 2 items of B. For every item A, I must buy one item of C. For every item E, I must also buy 2 of item D and one of item B. For every item purchased I earn 1000 points and for every rupee not spent I earn a penalty of 1500 points. My objective is to maximise the points I earn. What is the number of items that I purchase to maximise my points?

options....
a) 13 b)14 c)15 d)16

"Give me the procedure to solve this with in 2-3 mins . It takes to much time 2 solve this for me." - Satish Kumar

Pay attention to Satish's problem and suggest time reduction techniques along with the solution to the above problem.

I would latter include the best answer(s), posted as comment, in the post itself.

Stress management is a big challenge in our day to day life. The academic system and the pedagogy is such, that it appears very early in our life cycle. The first thing which will come to our mind after hearing about exam is tension or stress.

Through this article I would like to share certain ideas, which I gathered over the time, to reduce stress and increase efficiency during examinations. The underlying ideas can also be applied to manage stress in other aspects of our life. I hope it will be beneficial for all the readers of QM, either directly or indirectly. The intention of writing this article is to help readers willing to increase their efficiency and perform better, by making the exam process less tiring and little more enjoyable.

How to Manage Stress before Examination?

Take a piece of paper and list down the main reasons of your stress and anxiety. Next to each problem, write possible solutions. Take a break and discuss with your parents and (if possible) your teachers your fears and doubts

Create a schedule – organize your time and prepare for the exams.

Do your exam revisions with your friends. You will get to know few things which you might have missed.

Test your knowledge with friends. Meet them and try asking questions to each other.

How to beat Examination Fear?

Learn to face the exams. Shed away any fear of failure. Positive thinking is highly beneficial as it removes most of the stress out of your head.

Attempt a mental representation of the actual conditions that cause you stress in detail. When you do this exercise, you will notice that the more you imagine and visualize the exams, the more familiar they will seem to you.

When you can deal with your fears in your imagination, you can deal with them in reality as well.

If you are in school right now, you are yet to face many and most difficult examinations of your life. I will suggest you to read either of the two books -

Exam Stress, No Worries - Su Dorland

Beat Stress!: The Exam Handbook - by Anita Naik and Lynn Peppas

*for more information, the books are linked to their respective pages on flipkart.

Can the study environment affect stress?

A conducive study environment will definitely help to remove a lot of stress from you. So organize your study environment appropriately.

Create a pleasant environment without strong lighting and noise.

Make sure that the room has enough fresh air.

Turn off the TV and radio.

Keep your mobile phone in silent mode a little away from you and do not check it every minute for missed calls and messages received. Better still; switch it off for some time when you need to concentrate on some important topic.

Find comfortable places to study.

Please share your personal experiences about, how you used to manage stress during exam days. Everyone had a different way of handling the stress. I am sure all the readers must have faced this stress at some stage of their life and we all can learn something from each other.

I remember back to early 2005 (before going for my post graduation), when I’d just started preparing for some competitive examination, that even though I had great ambitions, my knowledge, expertise, and confidence as a student was sorely lacking. My love for internet (as a source of information) made me stumble through various places on the web to know maths short cuts and quick maths tricks, but without much to gain from it.

Now, after having being there and facing it all as a student first and then as a facilitator (though I take good number of Quants classes for CAT aspirants, I would not liked to be called a tutor or a teacher. These titles should be reserved for people of great wisdom and learning) for over 4-5 years I felt I had a really good grip on things; and even then, there were many things I am still struggling with.

Now with the help of QuickerMaths.com, I want to create a platform, easily accessible to the student fraternity where they can get what they are looking for; at least things related to Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning and Critical Reasoning - a platform where you can ask questions and where you can give answers.

Let The Process Begin

I’m starting the process by posting below an interesting formula of the topic- time and work . The aim is to initiate the process of collaborative learning. So anyone who wants to make a difference can post a comment with any explanation, formula, shortcut, trick, solved examples, etc. on the same topic (Time and Work for this post). You can also help by sharing the information of this platform with your friends or anyone who wants to help others and learn from others in the process.

You can stay in touch with what QuickerMaths.com is up to through our email subscription method. Also feel free to connect with me on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Time and Work Formula

I think the single most useful formula for the topic work and Time ?

N<sub>1</sub>H<sub>1</sub>D<sub>1</sub>E<sub>1</sub>W<sub>2 </sub>= N<sub>2</sub>H<sub>2</sub>D<sub>2</sub>E<sub>2</sub>W<sub>1</sub>

Where:

N1 and N2 = number of person

H1 and H2 = Hours worked by per person per day (assumed constant)

D1 and D2 = days

E1 and E2 = Efficiency

W1 and W2= Amount of work done

Consider this example to understand the applicability of this formula –

A piece of work can be done by 16 men in 8 days working 12 hours a day.How many men are needed to complete another work, which is three times the first one,in 24 days working 8 hours a day. The efficiency of the second group is half that of the first group?

Solution –

N<sub>1</sub>H<sub>1</sub>D<sub>1</sub>E<sub>1</sub>W<sub>2 </sub>= N<sub>2</sub>H<sub>2</sub>D<sub>2</sub>E<sub>2</sub>W<sub>1</sub>

16*12*8*1*3 = N2*8*24*0.5*1

N2 = (16*12*8*1*3)/ (8*24*0.5*1) = 48

So number of men required is 48.

Note – you can remove anything from formula is not given in the question. For example if the question would have been –

“A piece of work can be done by 16 men in 8 days working 12 hours a day.How many men are needed to complete another work, which is three times the first one,in 24 days working 8 hours a day.”

The applicable formula would have been –

N<sub>1</sub>H<sub>1</sub>D<sub>1</sub>W<sub>2 </sub>= N<sub>2</sub>H<sub>2</sub>D<sub>2</sub>W<sub>1</sub>

Since nothing is mentioned about efficiency, we remove it from both sides.

Take the Link Challenge

Today I thought it might be fun to do a bit of a fun challenge.

The challenge is very simple – You have to find the websites, blogs, web pages, etc. linking to QuickerMaths.com (QM) or any of its post.

As your answers you have to just paste the URL (link) of the website or blog where you have seen QM link.

Rules:

The link might be a blogroll link like the one in the image below on fireup blog

2. Link within the text referring to QM. That could be because someone copied any post from QM and pasted it elsewhere.

The figure below shows an example of this on forum of www.caclubindia.com

The link can be on a social networking site like facebook, orkut, etc. posted by you or someone else.

The link could be a simple mention of the link - http://www.quickermaths.com or www.quickermaths.com or quickermaths.com

(But it should be a link and not simple text)

*You can even give the link of websites or blogs where you yourself have give QM’s link. When you posted the link doesn’t matter.

**Links present on QuickerMaths.com website will not be considered.

I assure you it will be a fun filled experience and your “googling” skills will improve a lot.

Try solving this questions which has appeared in CAT, GRE and GMAT papers and many other competitive examinations. So try your hands at this question from topic speed and distance. You can expect similar questions in competitive examinations.

Here is the Competitive Examination Question -

A thief escaped from police custody. Since he was a sprinter, he could run at a speed of 40 km/hr. The police realized it after 3 hr and started chasing him in the same direction at 50km/hr. The police had a dog, which could run at 60 km/hr. The dog would run to the thief and then return back to the police and then would turn back towards the thief. It kept on doing so till the police caught the thief. Find the total distance traveled by the dog in the direction of the thief?

Here are the options -

a) 720 km
b) 600 km
c) 660 km
d) 360 km
e) 230 km

I will provide the solution later. I urge everyone to try this. Please give explanation with your answers -

Today I will discuss a very simple method of finding square of numbers between 26 to 74 mentally. In the subsequent post we will cover higher numbers. So keep watching this space to learn squaring any number within your mind

Square (also called perfect square) is an integer that is the square of an integer; in other words, it is the product of some integer with itself. So, for example, 9 is a square number, since it can be written as 3 × 3.

How to find the square of any number?

To apply this method you should know squares of 1 to 25 by heart. You can refer to this table to learn the same.

For finding square of any number between 26 to 75

Step 1. Find the difference between 50 and the number you want to square.

Scenario 1: If the number to be squared is greater than 50

Step 2. Add that many 100s to 2500 (which is the square of 50)

Step 3. Then add the square of the difference to the result of step 1

Scenario -2: If the number is less than 50

Step 2. Subtract that many 100s to 2500.

Step 3. Then add the square of the difference to the result of step 1

Example

Find out the Square of 67.

Step 1. Difference of 67 and 50 = 67-50 = 17
Step 2. This number is greater than 50. So add 1700 to 2500 = 4200
Step 3. Add square of 17 to step 2.

Answer = 4200+ 289 = 4489

Alternative method of calculating the square of a number:

Since, 67-50 = 17

67^2

We will be getting answer in 2 parts; see below – right hand side gives you tens and units digit. Left hand side gives you the remaining digits.

= 25 + 17 | (17)^2 ( | denotes separation )

= 42 | 289 (17^2 is 289. The 2 shown in subtext will be carried over and added to left hand side)

= 4489
